This scenic trail begins just east of Bondurant and extends for 20 miles to the Jasper County town of Baxter. Notice the mile markers along this former rail line, indicating the distance to Kansas City. The trail also crosses stone bridges dating from 1885, when they were built by the Wisconsin, Iowa & Nebraska Railroad.

Winding its way through the city of Clive and many heavily wooded scenic areas along Walnut Creek, the Clive Greenbelt Trail connects on the west end to the Raccoon River Valley Trail. It also contains connections to the Windsor Heights and Urbandale Trail Systems and, beginning in late 2006, connections to downtown Des Moines via the new Walnut Creek Trail through Des Moines and West Des Moines.

Downtown Des Moines contains a series of urban trail loops connecting many of the major attractions including the Science Center of Iowa, Principal Park, Gray’s Lake Park, the Court Avenue district, the East Village neighborhood and will connect to the Principal Riverwalk in 2008. The Downtown Des Moines Trail Loop contains the Meredith Trail, the Kruidenier Trail at Gray’s Lake Park, and the MLK Trail along Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway and the Principal Riverwalk, when completed. In the downtown loop, four trail bridges cross the Raccoon River or Gray’s Lake; two additional bridges will cross the Des Moines River as part of the Principal Riverwalk.

The Gay Lea Wilson Trail/4-Mile Creek Greenway Trail is a multi-segmented trail connecting Des Moines with Pleasant Hill and Altoona. From a hub off University Avenue at Copper Creek Shopping Center in Pleasant Hill, a segment of about 5.5 miles runs northeast to Altoona and connects with the Altoona Trail System; a second runs about 1.5 miles along Four-Mile Creek south to Scott Avenue in Des Moines; and a third runs northwest about 4 miles into Des Moines, terminating at Aurora Avenue.

Starting in Waukee and ending in Jefferson, the Raccoon River Valley Trail travels 56 miles, highlighting some of the history and natural features in the area along the way. It passes through what used to be the town of Ortonville, which was the winter housing site for the Orton Circus. In Adel, a side trip from the trail offers views of the historic French Tudor Court House surrounded by brick streets. Throughout its route, native prairie patches within the corridor provide glimpses of Dallas County as it looked before settlement. The trail also crosses the North Raccoon River in Adel and travels along the Middle Raccoon River just north of Redfield. Interpretive signs along the trail explain natural and historic sites.

Note: There is a $2/day or $10/yr charge for a pass to use the Raccoon River Valley Trail. These passes are available at all trailheads along the trail. There is no charge to use the trail within cities along the trail.

Running through woodlands, farmlands, wetlands and undulating prairie, the Summerset Trail showcases the best of Iowa’s natural heritage. Starting in Indianola, the trail winds through town about 1⁄2 mile before entering timber for the next five miles.
